If you loved The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson
Readers who love The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo usually come for the slow-burning cold case at its heart, a family secret buried for decades in a bleak Swedish setting. The book pairs a methodical investigation with dark, unsettling crimes and a sharp, prickly heroine. Its tone is gritty and socially pointed, its pace patient, and its mystery built on documents, interviews and old records rather than chases. Expect a long, layered puzzle with plenty of moral unease.
Tana French
Like Larsson's Harriet case, it builds a patient investigation around a buried, unresolved disappearance and a tight-knit group with secrets of its own. French's slow, atmospheric prose will suit readers who enjoyed the methodical unravelling.
Scott Turow
A legal thriller where a respected insider is drawn into a murder inquiry and the truth is slowly exposed through records and testimony. Readers who liked the journalist's careful digging will appreciate its courtroom-style precision.
Thomas Harris
A determined investigator works alongside a damaged, brilliant outsider to track a killer, much as Blomkvist teams up with Salander. Its chilling psychological tension will appeal to readers who enjoyed the darker crimes.
Gillian Flynn
A sharp, twisty psychological thriller driven by a complicated, unpredictable woman at its centre. Readers drawn to Lisbeth Salander's prickly intelligence will enjoy its cutting voice and dark family secrets.
Gillian Flynn
A bleak, unsettling mystery that revisits a family tragedy through a damaged protagonist. Its grim tone and fractured narrative will appeal to readers who loved the book's darker corners.
Jeffery Deaver
A forensic investigation with a brilliant, unconventional lead working through a crime scene clue by clue. Readers who enjoyed the detailed, methodical puzzle-solving will find the same satisfaction here.
Dennis Lehane
A dark, morally complicated story of a childhood trauma resurfacing decades later, told with weight and restraint. It suits readers who valued the book's emotional depth beneath its violent crime plot.
