Alexander McCall Smith
Also set in Botswana with Precious Ramotswe at the centre, but this is a different book from the Ladies' Detective Agency series. It is a good choice if you want more of Mma Ramotswe's voice and her unhurried moral reasoning.
Alan Paton
A classic novel of South Africa that shares the same humane, lyrical attention to ordinary people and community. Like the Agency series, it treats a personal search as a window onto a whole society.
Chinua Achebe
A landmark African novel with a patient, observant narrator and a strong sense of a particular community's customs. Readers who enjoy McCall Smith's sense of place and cultural detail will find much to admire.
Richard Osman
Four retirees in a care village investigate crimes with wit and affection. Like Mma Ramotswe, the amateur sleuths are older, observant and underestimated, and the tone is warm rather than grim.
